6 I San Manuel Miner www.copperarea.com June 1, 2016 By John Hernandez San Manuel Miner Veterans from the area were invited to attend the Memorial Day celebrations at the San Pedro Valley Lions Club in Mammoth. World War II, Korean and Vietnam veterans were represented as well as others. John Hernandez I Miner The people of the Town of Mammoth celebrated Memorial Day by honoring those men and women who have given their lives so that we the people can continue to live our lives in freedom. Local veterans made sure that all the graves of veterans at the Mammoth Valley View Cemetery were decorated with an American flag. The San Pedro Valley Lions Club served a free lunch of hamburgers with a choice of French fries or potato salad and cup cakes to all veterans and their families. They honored Art and Juan Garcia, two brothers from Mammoth who were killed in action in Vietnam. (The scholarships given annually to graduates of San Manuel High School were established in the brothers' honor.) The Mammoth swimming pool offered a free day of swimming and the Lions Club volunteers served free hot dogs to everyone. The free swim day was sponsored by the Town of Mammoth and San Pedro Valley Lions Club.
