Page 6 Tiger Continued from Page 1 didn't travel an awful lot, but you liked to get out of town once in a while. We were all buying cars. Not much money available. We kept the used car dealers in Tucson in business. My first brand-new car was bought at Ashland Motors in 1937, an Oldsmobile for $760. At the time, I was going with my wife, who lived on a ranch on the other side of the river from Mammoth. You'd cross the fiver in town. Once I was across it and was all fight until about fifteen feet from the other side. There was always a lot of water in the San Pedro. A wall of water came down and buried the car. I got out. I was pretty sorry. They took it in and tore it all apart, but it was never the same. Mammoth had lots of fights, brawls, dances. I had my share of fights. Lots of bars. Jackasses all over the place; ran all over town. Goat ranches up'near the Christmas area. Mammoth used coal oil lamps and wood stoves before electricity arrived. Mammoth is an interesting place, I have enjoyed all my years at Mammoth. Gambling in the form of cards went on most all of the time. Some were playing all of the time. Marcus and Jimmy Douglas, one of the first Magma claim holders. Douglas was a gambler; that's where he got his money. Ericson was the original claim holder. Nicols, Given and Douglas would grubstake Ericson and that's how they got thek one- quarter interest. The government drilled fifteen holes and Nichols was influential. The government had discovered copper. I married into the Clark family, and they were ranchers. My father-in-law owned 32 sections around the Tiger mine besides the farm on the river. Copper Creek was quite a thriving camp. A lot of people worked at Copper Creek. They were producing molybdenum and wulfenite. Harry Hendrickson's dad was general manager at Copper Creek. Harry could tell you some tales about the Copper Creek area. I put 33 years in at Magma. When I rbtired, I was the oldest man on the property. 1 went to work for Magma in 1946. We were on the 42nd drill hole. Goss had hired him because he was a block-caving expert from Miami. I got the job in charge of the drilling and the sampling, We finally drilled 112 holes. Had about eight or nine figs working and drilling on a grid pattern. The further we went, the ore body became more extensive. The grid was 200 feet on a side. Chum drills. Brought a rotary drill in from Texas; wanted to drill 2,600 feet and it wasn'tsucces8ful at all. Couldn't get a core or anything. Sell Tar was one of the characters that lived in the area. I knew him very well. Harvey Willeford worked for him for a while. A fine man, but he was quite the character. He had a lot of mining experience. He owned a property up at Tar Wash. That's about two or three miles from Tiger, as the crow flies. Had about the same minerals as in the Tiger property. Had wulfenite and never in the large quantities that Tiger had, and he had worked the place for many years. An interesting tale about Tar, he was the world champion single jack driller. At Miami, they held the competition for this title. About the time of the First World War, the Miami area was all settled with nothing but Cousin Jacks. Tar had a little house where he and his wife lived. My father-. in-law ran cattle in the area, and we'd stop and Tar's wife would always want us to come in. Tiger had offered him $10,000 for the property; tumed them down. He died. Never did sell the property. Several people have filed claim on it, but it has never turned into anything. Roundup was interesting; Rode for three or four years all over the range. Worked for my father- in-law, with the cow punchers. Cowboying was a profession; they were good. They were raised at it and worked at it all their lives. Old Clark was the same way. Some from the Three C Ranch would come down and help. The cow punchers were getting $25 per month and board. Out all day and came in at night.
